In biblical cosmology a firmament physically separated earth from the heavens and oceans above. These paintings imagine a reality where the structures built in the wake of climate change and environmental collapse have become our world’s new firmaments. The earth’s atmosphere is as much a human-built structure as the biodomes and greenhouses we need to grow our food. The gridding and organic components of the work suggest that our natural and built worlds are intertwined: precarious systems on the verge of collapse. Like these systems, my artwork is a collection of elements: materials, concepts, and aesthetic components -- each contributing to the larger built environment it comes to represent.
